About Us
Quassapaug Sailing Center

History
The Quassapaug Sailing Center is located on Lake Quassapaug on West Lake Road in Middlebury, CT. The building was built in 1927 by the Whittemore family as a summer retreat for children from Waterbury. In 1945, it became the new location for the Quassapaug Yacht Club as well as being used by the Waterbury Boys and Girls Club for a summer camp. The Quassapaug Yacht Club remained in the location until 2003. At that time, the newly formed Quassapaug Sailing Center, Inc. purchased the property to continue its long history of promoting sailing to the local community.
Mission Statement
Quassapaug Sailing Center (QSC) mission statement: "The QSC is an organization designed to provide sailing instruction and encourage and promote sailboat racing and good fellowship between persons actively interested in sailing and other water sports."
The Quassapaug Sailing Center has an active volunteer board of governance that directs our program development. All maintenance, events, and programs are run by volunteers. The only paid staff is for our Sails & Trails Camp and Adult Sailing Lessons.
Events
Sailing: QSC runs three regional Snipe Class regattas and a weekend local racing series.
Swimming: QSC runs open water swim training three mornings a week. On Labor Day weekend our Open Water Swim Festival consists of three races (3 miles, 1.5 miles and 0.5 miles). Three to four hundred people participate in the festival.
Facilities
The Quassapaug Sailing Center sits on a scenic knoll above Lake Quassapaug and offers a wide range of amenities to support sailing, swimming, paddling, and lakeside relaxation.
Our Adirondack-style clubhouse features a meeting room, kitchen, bathrooms, and changing rooms. On the covered porch, you'll find picnic tables and additional seating overlooking the lake.
The grounds include a boat launch, a small craft launch, a boat lot, sailboat moorings, and dedicated kayak and paddleboard racks. Three driveways provide access to the property: two are paved and one is gravel.
Down by the waterfront, members can enjoy a swim dock, a floating tanning raft, and a designated swim area with steps and a beach, as well as a shallow-entry launch for boats.
