Youth Programs 2011- Beginners


Session Dates:
Session One:

August 8 – 19, Mon - Fri, 9:00 - 12 Noon

Costs:
QSC Sponsors:  $175 per child per session
Non QSC Sponsors:  $250 per child per session

Enrollment 2011

Program Overview - Beginners:
Participants will be taught how to rig and sail Sunfish and Optimist dinghies, with a focus on fun, sailing games. Participants MUST know how to swim. ( A swim test will be given). Participants must supply their own Coast Guard approved Personal Floatation Device. (PFD type 111 USCG approved non-inflating life jacket) Participants do not have to supply their own Sunfish or Optimist dinghies, but participants will receive much greater sailing time with their own boats. US Sailing's "Start Sailing Right" book is included with the course.

 Day 1: Rigging, Parts of the Boat, Knots

  • Note card search (person with part finds partner with purpose)
  • Rigging Races
  • First Day Boat ride with instructors
 Day 2: Capsize, Overboard Recovery
  • Pirates
  • Rescue
  • Sink the Opti
  • Telephone

Day 3: Wind Direction, Points of Sail

  • 6 examples of wind direction
  • Points of sail land drill

 Day 4: Tracking

  • Tracking land drill
  • Tack master (how many tacks in one minute)
  • Figure 8 reaching drill

Day 5: Jibing

  • Jibing land drill
  • Jibe master
  • Hot dog drill

Day 6: Downwind Sailing

  • Basketball
  • Reaching Course

 Day 7: Upwind Sailing

  • Windward/Leeward
  • Box Drill
  • Tag

 Day 8: Olympics—Show all skills through an obstacle course
