2008 District One Championships and Whittemore St John Regatta

Lake Quassapaug Connecticut

The 2008 Whittemore St John Regatta at the Quassapaug Sailing Center (QSC) saw record attendance! 28 Teams descended on the lake including six Quassy teams. The biggest regatta in the northeast so far this year! Equipment littered the dry sail lot. Tents covered the hillside. McLaughlin, Phoenix, Mueller, Jibe Tech, Eclipse, Skipper and Persson Snipes were all represented. Quite an assemblage of different brands of our favorite boat.

Saturday morning found us on the lake with no breeze. Frisbees appeared to annoy the wind gods. After a brief delay a weak Southwest breeze filled in and a race was started. Four Olympic courses were run in a light breeze that threatened to build but never really did. Henry and Chris Filter won the first two races, but spent the afternoon contending with a very fast Art and Kelly Rousemaniere. The racing was hot and demanded high concentration to keep the boat moving in the lulls. And there were Holes to be avoided! The shifts were big – 45 degrees and came every half hour making for some very lopsided courses. The RC of Tom St John and Ryan Murphy did a great job of getting races off. Harry and Katie Levinson won the fourth race. Of course the breeze filled in very nicely as we completed the last race at 5:30!

Shelia Elser and Donna Erickson threw a great Mexican dinner. The teenagers bemoaned the lack of a DJ like our August regatta. Maybe next year they will DJ!

Sunday morning met us with a building Southeast breeze and the threats of T-storms. Race Committee Ryan Murphy, Allison Stafford and Kristen Heller got us started to a windy race taken by team Filter.

The second race on Sunday saw a very aggressive fleet with two recalled starts. Lengthening the line resulted in a clean third start to a windy race. The first lap saw Joel Zackin and Jen Matty in Mr. Bubble in the lead. The next two legs the Filters, Lee Griffith and Caroline Brady and Joel Zackin and Jen Matty exchanging the lead several times. In the end Lee broke cover and Mr. Bubble squeezed by on the finish line. Third, with three bullets, Henry and Chris Filter won the regatta. The RC was ready to run a third Sunday race, but the fleet, seeing black clouds, voted with their feet and headed to the dock.

Only Daryl and Harry Waskow managed some how to capsize on the way to the dock, clinching the Capsize Award for the event.

Collected at Quassy to sail all these similar but different boats were twenty eight very competitive snipe teams consisting of; three married couples, thirteen parent/offspring teams, three junior helmsmen, two Uncle and Niece teams, and one helmswoman. The remaining seven teams were ÔprofessionallyÕ staffed by two non-related sailors. Three rookie teams attended the event for the first time.

We had four Family Rivalries; Father and Daughter Team of Martin and Mackenzie Fraser trounced the son and Mom team of Cameron and Suzette Fraser on Saturday, Although Cam did take the old man twice. Father Daughter team of Art and Kelly Rousemaniere sailing ÔBeakerÕ were only beaten in one race by Son/Mom team of Adam and Jen Rousemaniere in the ÔSwedish ChefÕ. Local Couple of Peter and Kerri Wolcott walked on their son, Pierce, and his friend, Jon Meyers. Sara Levinson, crewing for Andy Klein had no luck catching her husband and Daughter Harry and Katie Levinson.

Awards were presented in many categories including. Top three Married Couples, Three Junior Teams, Top Three Rookie Teams, Capsize Award and Fist through Third. We hope everyone has had as much fun participating as we had hosting the regatta.
